If you’re like me, or most human beings, you start the day with coffee or tea. And if you’re even more like me, the place you store these items can easily become cluttered.
Preparing your morning drink of choice should be the least stressful part of your day.
So, creating an organized (and minimized!) space to house your caffeine is the goal here. Let’s do it.
- PURGE. Whether you have a drawer, cabinet etc. where you keep your coffee/tea – you need to declutter fist. Remove all of your items, spread them out where you can see them, and toss anything you’re truly not using. BE RUTHLESS. Do not keep the mugwort chamomile moss tea that will solve all of your life problems. You’re never going to drink it. Throw it away.
- CONTAIN. I recommend getting rid of the boxes and bags that your coffee/tea came in. This will be individual to you. You may need to find specific containers for coffee vs. tea in order to keep it fresh. Either way, I recommend using containers that are either clear or easy to label. I used a combo of Ikea tins I already had and thrift store finds. You DO NOT need to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy canisters and jars. Get creative. I highly recommend finding them at thrift stores or second hand.
- PUT AWAY. Now, be strategic in the way you put these containers back in your cabinet or drawer. I will tell you from experience – if something is easy to grab, you will use it often. Anything hidden or hard to reach will not get used. So, if this means purging even more, then do it. I has been over a month since I organized my tea cabinet, and I have managed to keep it exactly as it is. WHY? Because I don’t have a years worth of tea stocked, and I know where everything is. Thus, I use it, and only buy more when I run out – so my cabinet is never overflowing.
- FORGET ABOUT LOOKS. Yep, I said it. Your coffee/tea storage area does not have to be Instagram worthy. As long as it functions for you, that’s what matters. Give yourself a pass on this. Not everything needs to be pretty, or matching. If it works for you – it’s perfect.
- KEEP IT UP. Just like in life – you never just “arrive”. You have to maintain. Although I’ve been able to keep my tea cabinet organized for over a month; the main reason for this is because I have not over-purchased. I am using what I already have because I can see it right in front of me. My advice? Only purchase more when you run out. If you buy more than you need, there will be no place to store it and you’ll be starting from square one.
Thanks for coming along on this organization journey with me! Now, go enjoy a moment of Fika!
